Not every desert trip has to happen after dark. If dune bashing, sandboarding, and a camel ride sound appealing but a late-night BBQ and entertainment show don’t fit your schedule, Dubai’s daytime desert options are worth a serious look. We run two distinct early options — the Sunrise Desert Safari and the Morning Desert Safari — and the difference between them comes down to exactly how early you’re willing to start.
This guide breaks down what each one actually involves, how they differ, and which is the better fit depending on what you’re after.
Sunrise Desert Safari: chasing the first light
The Sunrise Desert Safari is built around one specific moment — watching the sun come up over the dunes. Pickup happens roughly an hour before sunrise, since the drive out to the desert takes about an hour and the goal is to have you standing on a high dune as the sky turns gold and crimson, not still in the car.
Once you’re out on the sand, the format is straightforward: dune bashing with a professional driver, a stop at a high dune timed specifically for the sunrise photo opportunity, sandboarding once the light comes up, and a camel ride to close out the morning. Unlimited soft drinks and cold water are provided throughout. The whole experience runs 4–5 hours door to door — pickup around 5 AM, drop-off back at your hotel by 9–10 AM — which means you’re free for the rest of the day.
This is the tour to book if photography is a real priority. The lighting during and right after sunrise is dramatically different from anything you’ll get later in the day, and the itinerary is built specifically to put you in position for it rather than treating the sunrise as incidental.
Morning Desert Safari: a later, more relaxed start
The Morning Desert Safari covers similar ground — dune bashing, sandboarding, a camel ride — but starts later, with pickup typically around 7–8 AM instead of before dawn. It’s shorter too, usually wrapping up in 3–4 hours and returning you to your hotel before midday.
The appeal here is simple: you get the same core desert activities without needing to be awake before sunrise. It suits guests who want cooler morning temperatures and a proper adventure session, but aren’t willing to sacrifice sleep for it. Optional add-ons like quad biking or a dune buggy session are often available for guests who want to push the adrenaline further — worth asking about at the time of booking.
Families tend to gravitate toward this option specifically because of the timing. A 7–8 AM pickup is manageable with kids in a way a 5 AM one usually isn’t, and the shorter overall length means less time in a moving vehicle before and after the activities.

Which one should you actually book?
-
If your trip has room for exactly one desert morning and photography matters to you, the Sunrise safari is worth the early alarm — the light at that hour genuinely doesn’t repeat itself later in the day, and the itinerary is designed around capturing it. If you’d rather sleep in a little and still get the full range of dune activities before lunch, the Morning safari gets you there with less disruption to the rest of your day.
Traveling with young children or older relatives? The later, shorter Morning option is usually the more comfortable choice. Traveling solo or as a couple chasing the best possible photos? Sunrise is built for exactly that.
Either safari also works well as a warm-up to a slower-paced activity the same day — our Camel Trekking tour is a good option for guests who want more time on camelback than the standard ride included here, at a gentler pace than dune bashing.
What to wear and bring
-
Desert mornings run cooler than most people expect — even outside winter — so it’s worth checking the forecast the night before rather than assuming daytime Dubai heat applies at 5 or 7 AM. A layer you can remove once the sun’s fully up usually works better than committing to one outfit for the whole trip.
For footwear, anything closed-toe that you don’t mind getting sandy is fine — trainers, hiking shoes, whatever you’d already pack for an active morning. Sandboarding and walking on loose sand are the main reasons to skip sandals, not a hard rule beyond that.
If you’re on the Sunrise tour and photography matters to you, bring whatever camera or phone you’d normally shoot with — the light at that hour is the main draw, so it’s worth having something in hand rather than relying on memory. All safety equipment for sandboarding and dune bashing is provided on-site either way.
Pairing with the rest of your trip
Because both tours wrap up by mid-morning or midday, they leave the rest of your day completely open. Many guests pair an early desert tour with a Dubai City Tour or Abu Dhabi City Tour in the afternoon, or wind down later with a Yacht Tour or Dhow Cruise along the water. If you want more desert time later in your trip, our Premium Desert Safari or Overnight Desert Safari cover the evening side of the experience, with dinner and entertainment included.
